Yep...it was my grandfather's favorite cake and he passed away almost 5 years ago. I never see one without thinking of him....

Red velvet is "special" because of the amount of food coloring that is added to the recipe, usually about 1oz (a typical size for a bottle of food coloring). Also, the frosting is usually a cream cheese based frosting, as opposed to a buttercream.
Otherwise, it's very similar to a basic cake recipe, with a small amount of cocoa added. As far as gluten-free, you would probably be able to make the cake by substituting a gluten-free flour for the cake flour in any red velvet recipe.

Red Velvet cake is special because I can wear a dress to match it, and still look sexy. It has an amazing texture, and it's such a sensual food to eat. It's amazing. Yay. And I don't think that you can find a gluten free recipe, if you do track me down :)

The only thing I can think of is it is a pain in the butt to make so when people see that it is Red Velvet Cake --it's a prestige thing--they think Wow! this person really knows how to cook and she takes this much time with her stuff--she's a regular Martha Stewart--blah, blah, blah--so anyway, you get the picture.

I don't so much care for the cake as I do the cream cheese frosting.
