it's virtually impossible due to most international flights being full. you would need to be a platinum member (or whatever the top tier is for your frequent flier program). you can do it online or call your airline. everyone else on the flight willl be trying to get upgrades also so act as soon as you can (for Northwest Airlines as a platinum member you can request up to 3 days in advance of the departure time).
