Higher volume = stronger bleach
Not always you can get the same results if you use lower volume. It is the time of exposure and the volume together that makes a diference.
The kind that I use goes from 1 to 3.
Why not use volume 3 for all your coloring needs? Because application time is about 15-20 minutes, not zero minutes. Strands that get the bleach first will be too light.
Why not use volume 1 for all your coloring needs? Because there may be not enough chemical in it to do the job, even if you leave it on for a long time.
Basically, if you are going from brunette to platinum blond you'll have to use volume 3, pretty much no way around it.

When you pick a certain kind of bleach for hair, look on the bottle, it'll say use ___ volume developer. The # of developer works best for the chemicals in that particuliar bleach. The darker the hair, the higher volume you need which is 60-80 volume. I would not advise applying bleach & developer directly to the scalp, you'll get sores, you'll itch & it'll peel & burn & you may have to go to DR & get antibiotics for healing or relief for infection.
Do use plastic gloves, bleach solution will eat your hands & be painful.
The easiest & safest way to apply bleach to hair, get a frosting cap, get a pkg of the frosting needles with different sizes (used to pull the hair thru the cap which has a plastic lining to keep bleach from seeping on the scalp). The larger the size of the needle--the biggest one--will pull thru the most hair.
It will leave some of your natural hair strand color behind, but after a year of bleaching, you'll wish you'd never started the expensive and timely process.
Follow directions when bleaching hair, if it says 15 minute process-wash it out in 15 minutes, if it says keep on hair no longer than 45 minutes-wash it out when the timing is up or after a few shampoo's you hair will break off possibly to a few inches long. This is strong stuff, read all directions, different colors & types of hair will not bleach out as light, even after an hour of processing.
Do go to a salon & have if done if you're not familiar with bleaching your hair.
Good Luck
