Speeding is usually due to lapse of consentration, a simple sensor which activates a request to slow down would be much more effective.
I am a grandfather and the thought of injuring our killing someone is totallly abhorent.
Everyone agrees that safety is of the utmost importance, the fact that just two cameras can generate 1.2 million pounds in one month in obscene.
P.s I'm not trying to be cool I'm trying to be fair.
If they are so effective why do they generate so much money?

there are signs that flash the speed limit, and they work, automatically you slow down,

i hate speed camera's, they say they are positioned in crash black spots, but all they do is move crash spots back down the road, as everyone slams on brakes when they see one.

i think the speed limit for motorways should rise after midnight until 6am to 100mph, but be fixed at 30 in towns and 20 near schools etc.

At the end of the day they are just a bloody scam, government guidelines say that all speed camera zones must be clearly signed, and the cameras themselves must be painted with a high visibility paint. So the chief constable of North Wales uses un marked and un signed HORSEBOXES with cameras in them (which is illegal), how can people then turn around and say that they are not just there to make money???? I believe and could quite possibly prove that reactive signs (the type that flash your speed up as you pass) are a far better deterrent against speeding than any form of camera, because if you are breaking the speed limit for the road you are on the sign flashes your speed in red so everyone knows you are speeding or it flashes green if you are not speeding it's all about the embarrasment factor. Also what happened to high profile policing on the roads??? You drive down the motorway and watch the way people behave when there is a police car on the carriageway

I agree with you completely, I used to drive through the Limehouse Link in London regularly which has 3 cameras - 1 at the entrance, 1 in the middle & 1 on the exit in both directions. I once got flashed for the exact reason you mention, lapse of concentration even though I knew damn well they were there. I wasn't going that much over but if someone drives a route regularly they know where the cameras are & those who are not quite as sensible as your good self, generally slow down for them then speed up again (myself included, not proud of it) but people do ...... however I went to a wedding in Gloucestershire & as we entered a small town loads of lights flashing telling me I was over the speed limit made me watch myself that much more & was much more effective

It is definitely a money making machine rather than a safety precaution at the moment but they (govt/local council) probably want to keep the income & they probably already know the sensors are more effective but it will take years before it comes into force

No driver should be on the road if they have periods of lapsed concentration --- that is surely far worse than a driver in full control and breaking the speed limit.
Unfortunately many accidents are in the main due to the offending drivers lack of ability and concentration - not speeding.
I seriously believe the speed limits on all roads should be reviewed and adjusted down where there are known 'accident ' spots and increased in other areas which will keep the traffic flowing smoothly. I do believe the motorway speed limit should be raised to at least 80mph with a special 'camera' clamp down on 'middle lane ' drivers. Although speed cameras do generate an obscene amount of income for the authorities intentionally, where they are operated fairly, the result is a good thing for us all.
Good luck and keep your eyes on the road and concentrate at all times!

I agree with you completly. The signs make you think when you see tehm and your natural response is to slow down. Whats more they cost far less to install than speed camera's freeing up more money for extra police officers.

Speed camera's are set in places where there have been at least 4 fatel accidents in a zone, but along the Embankment near where I live one of those accidents was that someone fell out of their boat IN THE RIVER, BESIDE THE ROAD!!! I have never driven my car on that river before!! This goes to show the 4 accidents is merely an excuse to place them in financially sound situations.

I don't know that flashing speed limits is a good thing because it scares me when that happens.. (sounds like I am a speeder..but I am not mostly) I nearly crashed when one told me I was doing 41 miles an hour in a 40 mile zone in Scotland..

I agree with you about killing someone with your car. I am aware every time I get into my car. I reverse slowly.. drive carefully.. like you I think those speed cameras are generating too much revenue.. where does this money go I wonder?

Good question by the way..

You wont have speed cameras soon, they have already developed and tested the technology to have satellite controlled on board computers that will automatically limit your car to whatever the speed limit for the area is.
If you are in a 30MPH zone, it will not allow the car to go over 30.
This equipment will also soon be charging you on your car usage patterns too.
I know it's planned and been developed/tested in the UK but I'm sure it will be a world wide thing.

Thinking about it, with that kind of technology on the car I'm sure they will be able to remotely shut down a car that has been stolen or used for criminal activities.

I think that you will find they are effective in their area. If you know there is a camera between your home and where ever you are going, you naturally slow down before you get to it. It is the `strangers` who happen to drive through your area and are not aware , that are caught. So the point you made about a warning, would be a good idea, under those circumstances.

I think the money they make is crazy but then no one is forced too speed,

but on the other hand sometimes driving too slow is as dangerous.

how many times have you been on the Motorway doing 70 mph only too come across someone pottering along at 40 ish.

Often in the middle lane with no other traffic in site !!

The people I know who speed do it deliberately, friend. In fact, one guy on this site SWEARS that if EVERYONE is going 85mph
that it is LEGAL to go that fast. I don't know where he gets his facts, but he's all wet.

The MAIN PURPOSE of those cameras is to generate revenue

SORRY, the authorities don't give a DAMN about safety. It's $$$$$$$$$$, with the EXCUSE being safety. wake up, man.
