The chicken or the egg is a reference to the causality dilemma which arises from the expression "which came first, the chicken or the egg?". Since both the chicken and the egg create the other in certain circumstances (a chicken emerges from an egg; an egg is laid by a chicken) it is ambiguous which originally gave rise to the other. Purely logical attempts to resolve the dilemma result in an infinite regress, since an egg was caused by a chicken, which was caused by an egg, etc. Since every chicken originates from its egg, it seems obvious the egg came first. Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. The solution may require an examination of syntax and may rely on verification from advances in modern genetic science. When used in reference to difficult problems of causality, the chicken and egg dilemma is often used to appeal to the futility of debate and lay it to rest.

Eggs get laid all the time but they can't come. Really, it is usually said that the egg comes first because the offspring is genetically different from the previous generation but the chicken is genetically the same as it was when it was still an egg. So theoretically, there was once an egg that was different enough from all previous birds to be a separate species (chicken) and that change happened when the egg was fertilized and not later. I say theoretically because the line between the old species and the new isn't clearly marked. The usual way of defining a species says that it can't breed with another species but unless by some incredible chance at least two eggs were created of the new species and survived to reproduce, the species would get nowhere. I think there is a transition period of several generations that would be able to breed with both the original species and the new one. Those individuals may be labeled as old or new or a different name entirely.

misz_kell: The first law of biogenisis (science) is, "life has to come from life". Therefore, it would correct to answer (qualified with science) that the chicken was first on the scene.
The idea or notion of you not getting it ! Look at it his way. The "what came first a chicken or an egg" is supposed create a dilemma or dichotomy [problem] of playing with your head. If you say, "the chicken came first"; then, you leave yourself open to the other side of the coin ,,, "if the chicken came first, then where did it come from with no egg existing!" If you were to answer, "the egg came first"; then, someone might answer, "you need a chicken to lay the egg!" and on ...and back and forth the issue goes! The REAL answer to this, is what I mentioned in the opening of this posting. Hope this informs you.

You're not really supposed to get it.
It's a paradox...if the egg comes first, where was the chicken who laid it? If the chicken comes first, where was the egg it came in? Rather like the relationonship between general relativity and quantum mechanics.

The chicken of course ! Oh where did the chicken come from? The egg then ! Oh wait, what about the egg, didn't it came from the chicken ? Damn... I know ! An alien egg-chicken hybrid organism able to reproduce by itself ! Ha ! I knew it !

Chicken
- God made the universe and surround it with animals. So I suppose, chicken just hatched eggs after.
- In the dictionary, it also came first rather than egg.

well, assuming you follow the adam and eve births (they didnt have belly-buttons, they were created not birthed) then the chicken came first...make any sense.....the story u dont understand is, if the egg came first, what about the chicken that laid the egg? and if the chicken came first, did it come from an egg?

egg, the chicken keeps evolving eggs laid and almost chickens hatch out...then one day the egg is laid with a chicken in it. This is soooo obvious!
