With Budgerigars, the males are playful, foolish and care-free while the hens tend to be serious, grumpy and moody - just like in people! (This is meant to be amusing, but there IS a definite difference in the disposition of the male and female budgerigars.) You can distinguish the males, for the cere, that fleshy area over the beak, around the nostrils is bright blue in the boys. If it's ANY other color, the bird is a hen. In the light colored Keets, particularly Albinos and Lutinos, the Ceres in both cocks and hens are pink. When you have a breeding pair, you may never witness any interaction between the two birds. The male will do acrobatics about the cage. The hen will sit in one spot and grumble and nag to herself. This is normal for Ma and Pa Keet!

Now this is a general answer and it helps if the parakeets are not young, it's easier to sex once they reach a year old.

Generally with a male parakeet the area surrounding the nostrils is more blue than a female.

gender is really hard to tell, even the experts get confused. usually if the top of their beak is darkish blue then the bird is male if its much lighter then its a female.... but u can never know for sure. for months i thought my parakeet was female, her(his) vet said the same thing but recently when we went in its(?) beak was darker and we are pretty sure that its a male

by the noses

Blue = male
brown equals female
unless you get an albino or lutino where the nostrils remain pink all their lives. Usually the male will have a slightly larger head

it's as simple as this:

the male parakeet has blue or violet nose/nostrils

the female parakeet has white or brown one

try to observe, you'll see...

break a leg!
