I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to get rid of that "plastic" taste that bag salad gets. Whenever I buy all the ingredients for a salad, some always goes bad before we eat it (there are only two of us). When I buy the bag salad I can't stand the taste! HELP.

I do wash it really well.
I just had some with supper and when I washed it I also spashed some lemmon juice on it. Then I washed it again. It was not too bad!

Some grocery stores have a bin of salad mix that is fresh and you just take how much you need. That's what we do, there's only 2 of us also.

Usually as soon as I buy it, I take it out, wash it and toss it in the salad spinner, then drizzle a little lemon juice, and put it in a ziploc bad until ready to use. When I am ready to serve it, I add some special touches, like slices of cucumber on top, grated cheese, croutons or like sliced meats. Still makes it a lot easier by using the bag, but gives it a fresher taste with the add-ons.

Huh, I've never had that "plastic" taste with my bagged salads; are you using a name brand like Dole? Also, look at the expiration dates; they usually put the fresher salad in the back and the ones ready to expire out front; Why not remove the salad and wash and spin/dry it, then repackage in a fresh zip lock bag?

I usually buy the bulk, choose your own, greens available in my store. And even if the bag says 'pre-washed', I would recommend washing it well then drying it in a salad spinner. When I used to buy the bagged salads I never noticed an off taste, but then in addition to washing it I served it with a sherry vinegar vinaigrette.

I am a single person who frequently makes bagged salad. I often add other vegetables such as tomato, cucumber, red onion, black olives and green or red peppers. I make the whole bag and the secret to keeping it fresh is to store it in a sealed container to keep the air away from the veggies. Rinse the bagged veggies to freshen the taste when initially making the salad.

You probably don't want to buy bag salads, ever.
Here is why. In order to transport bulk of bag salads over long distance( think the recent US E.coli incident where a mere one producer would supply 8 states), they treat vegetables in the bag with chlorine( think bleach.) The reason is that bacteria tend to multiple quickly when temperature rises in side the bag when those bags are transported by trucks long distance. Chlorine is intended to use kill or suppress bacteria growth.
If you don't think coating vegetable with bleach is a good idea, you probably don't want it with chlorine either. I love salads but I personally don't ever purchase bag salads though. =)

Bag salad is nasty. They leave too many hearts and stems on the lettuce too. I always buy heads of lettuce and mix my own.
