go to dr. phil's website...very good info from his mentor...can't remember his name...the show about this last week was super informative....good luck. kids with a.d.d. and adhd are very bright and need a lot of help learning concentration skills.

speaking from experience, these kids also need a tightly structured environment at home, and constant follow-through by the adults in their lives. it's hard work, but the rewards are awesome.

How to increase his attention span? I am just wondering what do you think is the reason he has a short attention span is school anyway? I think the same about my son, but he doesn't have a behavioural concern. He just seems to have his own mind...like he is more socially alert. So because he likes being his own individual already and protects his independence I just talk to him like he's a grown up BUT I always tell him WHY I am asking him to study more often, pay attention and listen. I tell him to concentrate on school stuff on during the week so he can do weekend things on the weekend. He seems to be improving. However, he has to be reminded. It's just like bathing...he needs regular motivation or he'll (be a regular child) and slack off...just like you need a bath everyday or you start to smell! :))

Have you tried one on one tutoring? This might give him extra attention. Or maybe even a teaching coach to give him all the encouragement he needs just like an athlete who trains all year round to become a better athlete.

He needs to be engaged by the subjects. If information is presented in a boring format, he is going to quickly distract himself with other things. Meet with his teachers, if necessary, to come up with ideas on how to make the subjects more dynamic.

Bribe him with things he likes. If he already has those take them away. And slowly give them back as he progresses.
