My five year old homeschooled child has asked me several times about volunteering. What kinds of things can a five year old do to volunteer?

how about contacting a Boys & Girls Club, where you as well as ur child can get involved? :)

local library sometimes has children based activities

visiting the elderly is good, maybe recite a poem, or sing a song for them, etc.... make cookies, have him help distribute

u can always try to get in touch w/ other home - schooled parents/kids and put together a "club" of some sort.. u can hand out roses to random people, or sell lemonade and donate the money to a charity, they can draw pictures and write notes and u can send them to the troops in iraq, etc....

good luck! :)

My son is now six. But when he was 4 & 5 we volunteered at the local animal shelter. We'd go in one night a week to walk the dogs, clean kennels and feed and water everyone. He loved it. We've also simply bought supplies for the shelter and for the local food bank. I explain why we're doing it and he helps me pick out items for both. Also, I volunteer as a cashier at our local artisans store. The kids go with me and they help clean and sometimes talk the ears off our customers. :)

Call animal shelters, hospitals, etc and ask them what kind of volunteer opportunities they offer. If they don't have anything for his age then ask if they have something for you and if he can tag along. Just being there to help you will still enrich him.

a little to young for this, but you can start your child with the experience of what a volunteer does by listing some things that a five year old is capable of doing...
sweeping porch,
water inside plants,
gathering their laundry and sorting them
put away their laundry in their room
getting the newspaper, mail, if you have pets give them the job of keeping water bowl full
emptying the small garbage in bedrooms, bath rooms.

I don't know if it counts as volunteer work but you could take him/her to a nursing home to visit the elderly. My daughter and I go regularly. The people there love it!

Have your child do christmas carols at elderly homes for the holidays. It's not a long term thing but it makes both the kids and the elderly extremly happy. Also it's something you two can do together...perfect for little ones!

Perhaps you can both volunteer at the local animal shelter? I know that quite often they are lookin gfor people to just spend time with the animals. Walking them and brushing them. It may be good for him and you. Not to mention the animals.

If you go to church you could volunteer to clean up after the service or help the Sunday school teacher prepare for her class (setting up centers, cleaning up etc).

Try contacting a local retirement home or assisted living community. If you're willing to go in with him/her to supervise, most places now have incorporated children into their repertoire of activities.

Try to hook up with a nursing home or adult daycare. My kids visit the "grandmas and grandpas" (our name for them) at our local adult daycare once a month. we do this in a group from my MOMS club, but you could do it on your own or set up a program wtih other homeschoolers.
