I would serve a buffet dinner so people can mingle, sit where they are comfortable and eat, especially if you are going to have a crowd. Before placing the food on the table, I would serve appetizers, finger food, which can be prepared ahead of time, by you or purchased at the grocery store in trays. Veggie platter, cheese and crackers, loaf of bread scooped out with a dip inside and cubed bread, just to give you some ideas.
The entree should be something fairly simple, say a prime rib roast, honey sliced ham, something that is not too messy and difficult to eat. I would serve a side dish of hot German potato salad, or a nice rice pilaf and a vegetable.
Dessert could be a fancy, decorative cake along with a variety of cookies for those who chose not to eat cake.
I would have a pitcher of water on the table along with a fruit punch. If you decide upon soda, it can become difficult with who's soda can belongs to whom, whereas, there are little glass charms you can purchase so everyone has their own to identify their beverage.
I hope this gives you an idea as to how to plan your party. Enjoy!

If you have a group that is fun loving and overall like average 18 year olds, get a few nice appetizers and have enough good quality pizza to go around.
If you are looking for the more formal route, as you may suggest (and you have enough money), go with more fancy appetizers and small portions of steak or chicken parmesan with a potato dish on the side with some nice beverages.
Happy birthday, and I hope everything goes great!
God Bless!

I don't have any real ideas but I will tell you of an idea we did for a 16th birthday party.
We told everyone it was a formal dinner. "church clothes style formal not prom Formal"
Here is the catch, we served spagettii with out silverware, in their place there were large towels at their chairs, with handtowels beside their plates along with a pair of rubber gloves.
Let me tell you it was very interesting and we had a Blast. We have a lot of great memories from that night including a small competition between the us on who could suck up the most noodle strings without touching them. We had meat ball spitting contest.. trying to get the meat ball to land on the other plate by shooting it out of our mouths.. Thank Goodness for trash bag aprons and tile floors.
Good luck.

Cold shrimp on a platter with cocktail sauce
Finger sandwhiches
Cheese with crackers (not like Toll House with cheddar, something nicer than that!)
Check out the link below. You'll want to decide too if you just want to have like appetizer type stuff or a full sit down (appetizer, etc. will be WAY easier & still very classy).
Happy Birthday!

I do alot of catering, and we do pork loin roast or baked chicken leg quarters, with either scalloped potato's or mash potatoes and gravy. add a simple green salad, your choice of veggie and some rolls.
For a easy fancy looking dessert, I mix 3 sticks melted butter,1/2 cup sugar and 6 cups graham cracker crumbs. Press into bottom of restaurant size bake pan.
Mix 2 bars cream cheese soften with 1/2 cup sugar and 3 small tubs cool whip, spread on crumbs. Top with 2 cans of cherry pie filling. CHEAP, EASY ,AND LOOKS FANCY
you can use any flavor fruit.we've done strawberry and blueberry

Oprah had a balck and white party once, and she wore a Red Gown to it. So i guess its your perogative. HOwever i think if you wanted to stay with the theme you should do something outrageous wear a gown instead of jsut a dress or just something outrageous to that effect and then color up your makeup or wear a crazy colored wig to stand out. Theres alot you can do its your brithday go crazy

I assume it's buffet serve yourself style? If so, tortilla wraps (cream cheese, whatever kinds of meats/veggies inside) cut on the angle always look nice and taste good too. Crab cakes, fruit salad and "fancy" cut veggies with various dips are also good.
