Excellent!
If you are using Tarot cards as an oracle, you may be more inclined to read card meanings. But if using Tarot Cards as a tool for Psychic Ability you would be less likely to hold to any hard and fast guide lines. I’m a profession psychic and use Tarot Cards in a random way. In 25 years of professional readings I’ve never used any ‘meanings’ of tarot cards from any books.
So if you want to develop ‘Psychic Ability’ throw the books away and let the images inspire you.
I believe we are all psychic, but for the majority the gift or the belief has been long knocked out of them. Educated out is another way of looking at it. Many professional psychics have grown up in a psychic friendly environment. Perhaps a grand-parent or parent with the knowledge has helped bring the extra sense out in the open and encouraged its use. But there are as many practicing psychics who have not had the benefit of caring psychic guidance and who have still managed to develop and hone this natural extra sense. The Psychic Sense.
To tap in to it more you can go to my free develop-psychic-ability page here: http://www.psychic-junkie.com/develop-psychic-ability.html
But on the other hand, if you want to use the Tarot as an oracle, a form of divination that needs no real ‘psychic ability’, then keep the books and use the meanings if you prefer.
Here is a free download demo for a great Tarot program. To keep the size of the demo manageable it contains the Rider/Waite deck, the actual program will have 10 complete decks. This Demo version of Tarot is a full working copy for 30 days. So you get 30 days to study meanings and spreads! http://www.free-tarot-download-demo.wotsnext.com

sounds like you got a lot of "supposed tos" in your mind. Or perhaps that's indicative of the conflict you have within.
Reading cards "literally" according to "package directions" is not the best of readings...it is only a generic reading. It is not the prefered "should" as you would put it. But the best readings are done by skilled psychics who use them as prompts to "feel" meaning. Maybe that is what you are doing which is a progresive step in the right direction. I sense it is a little of both..expand and use your psychic senses but acknowledge you do have some conflicts. Are you having trouble accepting the obvious?
One last word: while it is certainly great to do your own readings, you will never be objective enough with yourself..get one from someone else from time to time. And loosen up. YOu are way to rigid with the shoulds

The cards have to be interpreted by the reader. Each reader will probably have varying meanings for each card. Also, combinations of cards in certain patterns may suggest meanings that would not be obvious looking at any one card by itself. If you have a nice deck with lots of illustrations, like the Rider-Waite decks, it may be best just to toss all the conventional meanings for the cards and interpret them according to what the pictures suggest to you. Reading Tarot cards is an art, not a science. Don't get yourself bogged down in trivial details.

No offense, but don't get involved with Terot cards. They serve no meaning at all. There are demons that are involved in these type of things. You don't want to go there. I'll tell you something that is more meaningful and helps serve as a guidance to all mankind: The Bible is the answer to your questions in life. If you have one, you should read it daily. I'm not saying that you should read the whole Bible daily. But read at least 10 to 15 minutes of it at a time per day. Then meditate on what you have read. You will have a more meaningful life if you do so.

a true reader of cards you may be.
the cards will speak to you and tell you their secrets.
there are traditional meanings associated with them. but this is mainly because someone needed to be able to package and sell them.
if the cards speak to you go with what they say.
the more time that you spend with them the better you will get to know each card, and the more information the cards will give to you.

Trust our own intuition. Book meanings are for people like myself who has trouble developing my own meanings. All the books I have point out that the book meanings are just a general guide and your goal is to develop your own meanings in time.

With Tarot, I find, that you need to look at your current situation and see what the card might mean. for example, the "death" card rarely means a physical death, it could mean a change in your way of life, a relationship ends ect.
PS: no its not the devil. please.

Yes, they can be very different. The most accurate meanings are those that speak to you. If you feel conflicted about what the deck is telling you, shop around for a different deck that you feel more in harmony with.

Trust the cards, but make sure the deck is aligned with you. You won't get a good response fom a deck imprinted with someone else's aura.
