when history is displayed do I delete items seperatley or with disk clean up?

If you are talking about Browser History (list of websites you visited), you need to go to the Internet Options of the browser and you will find "Clear History" which should take care of that.

If you are talking about "Document History" (files you opened getting listed in "Documents" in the Start Menu, then right click on taskbar, select properties, go to "Start Menu" tab and click Customize. You will find a recycle bin icon and a Clear button next to it. That should take care of it.
