It depends on how you cook it and where it was raised.

If just plainly roasted, or with herbs, you do not want a wine too "big" but one well rounded, slightly toasty with good fruit. We will usually select one of the following for our lamb roasts: a good Greek all-purpose red like Santa Laura, a good French pinot noir Burgundy, a supple pinot noir and gamay blend like French Passtoutgrains or Swiss Dole (Oh!! If northern Californians would only make such a blend, or a blend of pinot noir and pinot st-george! But no CA winery does to my knowledge), or a Spanish Rioja reserva.

Sometimes we will really treat ourselves, marinating the lamb in olive oil and then roasting it with lots of tomatoes, olives, garlic, rosemary and other aromatic herbs and serve it with a firmer and great red like a Lebanese Musar or Italian barbaresco.

I would serve any red wine, including a Burgundy, Claret, and Chianti. Serve at cool room temperature. The fragrance of a red wine is improved if the cork is removed about 1/2 hour before serving.

Get a nice hearty Merlot with strong woody nose darker the red the better it will be with lamb, and get something moderate or high in the price range you don't want to spoil your lamb with a cheap wine.

Depends on how you're doing the lamb.... I'd say red, new world, nothing too robust unless you're planning on heavy seasoning
