I would say "on" January 24, 1828, instead of "in," and don't forget to put a comma after 1828, which is always stylistically necessary.

Personally, I'd re-write the whole sentence but that's just me.

On January 24, 1828, James Marshall discovered gold in a valley the Indians called Cullumah.
