Yes, though usually they are small jobs like assistant camp or after school program counselor, and you will have to be at least age 14.

Depends on the job and the 8th grader.
If you assume that the legal obstacles to holding the job are removed, you must consider the kind of work AVAILABLE that is suitible for someone of that age and level of education.
Beginning from the most basic, such as paper delivery, babysitting and other traditional youth jobs, there should be no question that an 8th grader CAN be capable. There are decades of evidential examples.
Stretch the demands of the job a bit to include others, NOT traditionaly held by people of this age. Grocery or convienience store clerk, gas station attendants, theater ushers and ticket takers. Think of fast food service, houshold cleaning, and agricultural jobs. While no longer allowed by law, these are also jobs that have often been done by youngsters. This was especailly true in family-run businesses.
If all OTHER legal restrictions remain in place, this can limit the kinds of jobs of which 8th graders are capable. The minor must remain is school for a certain number of years. People of that age would not be able to hold the driving type jobs, for example.
Finally, the most critical limitor would be the eduactional background required for some jobs, and the physical strength and endurance requirements for some others. An 8th grader would NOT be able to design nuclear weapons or facilities. Would NOT have the legal knowlege to prosecute a legal case, or the medical knowledge (and experience) to diagnose and treat a complex medical condition. Most 8th graders are not large enough to play pro football, or be an effective soldier.
So, strictly looking at the CAPABILITIES of an 8th grader, the answer is, clearly yes. Look at the inverse of the argument. Most ADULTS cannot play professional football, or be brain surgeons or capable trial lawyers. But there is a level of job requirements that may suit a responsible 8th grader.

I don't know what side you are debating which makes answering this difficult. I was a provincial debater in Canada and I can tell you that you can completly ruin you opposition's arguments by defining in this case "a job" at the beginning of the debate. For example if you were arguing that they are capable of having a job, define a job as "a task that requires a certain amount of responsability with or without profit" (which could include flipping burgers, babysitting etc.) if you are arguing that they are not capable of having a job, define "a job" as "an intensive employment consuming great amounts of time in exchange for money" (you could then argue that by definition, 8th graders are not capable of this because they dont have great amounts of time to devote to working and 8th graders jobs are not necessarily intense) Obviously these definitions are off the top of my head and will need great altering, but by defining key points at the beginnign of your debate, so long as your opposition does not dispute you definition, you can claim most, if not all their arguments are invalid because it does not correspond to the definition you gave. Note: In this particular debate I would also define "capable" and even "8th grader" (if they have failed the 8th grade ten times and is 23 yrs old, would they then be capable of having a job?)
Good Luck and I Hope this helps!

8th grader... Depends on their age, not what grade they are in. In our country the legal age I believe is 15 or 16, depends on state probably to.
the normal 8th grader is 14 years of age, or 15. And in that case, no it is not acceptable to have a job at 14. Most places do not hire, and in most circumstances its illegal.
However if its an outside of the Government job, such as babysitting your neighbors kids, there is no taxes involved, therefore no legal matters...
The answer is No to the average 8th grader.

I won't do your homework for you, but consider what happens in parts of the world other than the United States, Canada and England. Children as young as 5 or 6 must work or the family starves. We have laws against child labor because of the amount of abuse children had in earlier times (read some of Charles Dickens books). That we have those laws doesn't mean children are not capable.

My son got his job This summer between 8th and 9th grade.at a Pizza place. I was worried that he wouldn't listen to his boss just like he doesn't listen at home ; )
But exactly the opposite happened... He took initiative to learn everything and has even received a raise after only 2 months of employment.
I say yes but as with anybody...It depends on the maturity of the person...

if they are mature, and smart then yes. But of course a job could be anything, a job could be anywhere from babysitting too the president. So technically yes they can (babysitting, but not president) they have to be ready to handle it though. Not just any 8th grader can handle that kind of thing!

In my state, the age when you can work is 14. They will check your grades before you can be approved to work! So a kid that has good grades, has transportation, and a good attitude might be able to pull it off.
On the other side of the dabate, a student has all the rest of their lives to work, why start in the 8th grade? What does the loss of freedom get you? If you can answer that question, you'll be on your way.

It depends on their age and they might have to have a work permit but to be honest it would be really hard for a person of that age to get a real job because of problems such as dependable transportation
