Several issues here: first big one is tongue weight. The tongue weight really shouldn't be much over 200 pounds on a 1/2 ton truck. The Ranger is smaller, so I'd stay under 100-150 pounds.

Second is overall vehicle weight. If the trailer has it's own brakes you could go a bit larger than if it doesn't. If you are towing on flat roads you can tow a bigger trailer than in the mountains.

In no case should the trailer weigh more than the vehicle towing it! If the trailer has no brakes, remember your truck will be doing all the stopping! On a no-brake trailer I'd say no more than 1/2 the weight of the tow vehicle. (your gross vehicle weight should be inside the doorjamb)

One more thing: on automatics don't use the top gear (overdrive) when pulling: it can burn up the transmission.

Check the owner's manual. It will show the GVWR gross vehicle weight rating which combines the total weight of the truck and trailer with passengers and contents of both. Look for your engine and transmission listing. Too many variables left out of your question to give a definitive answer. Engine, trans, body style, towing equipment (bumper hitch or receiver), cooling system, etc.

Having owned one, they are difficult little buggers which could haul lots, yet their battling power is poor and unsafe to pull something extra desirable than a single axle trailer or small boat. verify your proprietors handbook or look on your rear bumper for specifications.
