I have tried several other techniques and they seem to work just fine. First, if I know my daughter is not telling me the truth I tell her to look at me. I ask the question one more time and if she is still lying I tell her that I want her to think about what happened and what I am asking. I tell her to go to her room sit down and wait for me to come in. Several minutes later I ask her again and she then usually tells me the truth. After she tells me the truth, I tell her that I am proud of her for telling me the truth and because she did I am able to trust her. Of course, I tell her what she did was wrong and I don't want her to do it again. I do believe that a child needs to be disciplined and spanked, however, I think spanking also brings fear in the child and because of that fear they might not want to tell the truth so they won't get spanked. Also if my daughter did something very wrong and didn't tell the truth until I went to talk to her in the room, I praise her for being honest, but if needed she will be punished in someway. Example, no TV for the rest of the day, no playing with her toys..etc. I also tell her that I am taking away the TV or toys because of the action she did not because she didn't want to tell me the truth.

Never,Never, Never. I have never spanked my children and I never will, I always felt that you shouldn't physically hurt the ones you love the most in the world. If he/she has lied, find the reason they lied and why they felt they needed to do that. Explain to them that they shouldn't be afraid to tell you anything that you love them no matter what, this will give them the confidence to let you know what is bothering them.

Of course the child gets a spanking! Lying is a sin. Sin is not allowed to go unpunished.
When the child lies, a hard bare bottom spanking is given to her in front of her Mom and other sisters.
This is a deterrent and also cleanses the soul from the sin.

Probably not but it would depend on how frequently the child is lying, and how severe the lies are. We have a child with an attachment disorder in our home, and "crazy lying" is a hallmark of this condition ... so we hear a LOT of lies in our house. Most of the time, we point out the absurdity of her lies and ask her to tell us the truth. If we can't get to the bottom of the truth, we take away priviledges until she confesses. We also tend to pull out the story about the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" to remind her that people won't trust you to tell the truth if you continue lying. For the rest of our children who do not have this problem, we call their bluff and ask for the truth ... with them, calling their bluff is usually enough to get a confession.

Yes, if that is a form of punishment in your household it would be entirely appropriate to spank. Has anyone noticed that as more and more theories crop up to be lenient on our children and not punish them etc. the rate of juvenile crime has increased. Our parents were raised with VERY strict rules and their generation is WAY better behaved than ours (20-30's). And WE as a generation were better behaved statistically than todays teenagers! Stop COUNTING, Start SPANKING!!

Tell him your going to take him to the zoo and then to get ice cream and then just sit there and when he bugs you say--I lied--how does it feel? Well, okay, --use a third person approach on how much this other person hurt their parents by lieing to them and then ask him if he thinks there is ever a good reason to lie try to feel him out a little bit. Then just talk to him about how you are pretty smart and know when people lie and does he have anything to tell you before you continue to make out your shopping list to Santa?

I would have to say no not right off. Let them know that what they did was wrong. Tell them that it's not nice to tell a lie. If they continue then you have to do what you have to do and spank them. They should know that lying leads to all kinds of dishonest things.

Yes, that is one of my ground rules. If my girls break one of my ground rules they get a spanking, or equivalent.
Granted they must be of age to know what a lie is, and be actually telling a lie and not just using there imagination in like a story. We know the difference

My son started doing that lying to me to my face and looking me in the eye...was not impressed. i do beleive in a smack on the bum. he was worryed i would do that. so i said you tell the truth and i wont smack you or keep lying and i will smack you... well he told the truth i said know do you tink you should be punished he said yes... so instead i grounded him from something he really liked...either they have a farvorite toy, game or activity. i found taking away tv was a good one. but make sure you don't do it for to long as they will find something better to do and it wont work again sometimes it pays to be creative....
