i wish someone would invent something where people could search for something while sitting at their computer. something that would work fast, like an engine. and then call it a "search engine." man, that would be great.

http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html - this website is the official gov't website for the US. You will need two passport photos (try Walgreens, CVS, Kinkos) and a certified birth certificate. You can fill the form out on line & print it. You will need to contact the local passport acceptance office to see if you need to make an appointment. When I went early this year the fee for non-expedited passports was about $90, but could have gone up since then. Happy exploring!

Go to a large post office. This will not work if you live in a small town of 100 people who have never traveled farther than the mailbox. They will be able to take your picture there. Make sure you are dressed appropriately and fully covered in the picture. It cost a bit, somewhere between 40 and 60 dollars. But traveling is worth it. Also, if you do live in the small town I described, look up locations online.

This link may also help. It has the application.

At Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, and 1 Gateway City Agency, which serve customers who are traveling within 2 weeks (14 days), or who need foreign visas for travel.

Call 1-800-ASK-USPS and they will give you post office locations near your home that offer the passport processing service. I just did the same thing about two weeks ago (I had mine expedited). The post office has certain hours and days they set aside for passport processing. If you have yours expedited and have the postal service take the two pictures that are required, you should have your passport in about two weeks... Total cost is around $150.
