I enjoy red wine but am willing to switch to anything for cocktail hour that will not destroy my weight. I eat well, exercise daily and sleep 8 hrs., so don't preach to me about dieting and lifestyle.

Alcohol in all forms is detrimental to any weight loss effort. Basically, your body digests alcohol as sugar. It is like eating a choclate bar or something like that. As long as you drink in moderation(read 1 drink) you probably won't see any ill effects.

Alcohol and diet are like ice and fire, cats and dogs. It's not really the type but the quantity and the quality you drink. Poor quality beverages do much damage, but being in a company Sunday afternoon do not feel any discomfort because you drink a small glass of wine or so, you won't put up 5 ponds because of that. Of course, it's good if you can resist.

Once glass of red wine every few days has some great health benifits, including being good for your heart. If it is weight loss issue, vodka has the least amount of sugar and carbs, so a vodka and diet tonic is probably best. Make sure you specify diet tonic, regular tonic water has added sugar as well.

My brother in law used to weigh way over 300 lbs, maybe closer to 400. Anywho- the way he got his weight down to a steady 250 is by heavily working out everyday. An hour on the treadmill or bike, a bunch of sit ups and chin-ups on a PowerTower. He also eats super healthy 5-6 days a week. He takes one day to eat as he and drink as he pleases, and of course whatever day we happen to celebrate a holiday or a birthday. He LOVES wine, LOVES it. I don't think I can emphasize that enough!!!

Basically, it all comes down to quantity. He drinks ONLY red wine, so if that is your favorite, then I guess you are safe. He drinks at least a bottle on his "fat day."

Good luck!

My friend is so all about dieting. she goes to people to help her and everything. She swears by vodka. And tonic. Put in a lemon or a lime for some flavor. It's not necessarily the booze, it's what you put with it. Don't mix pop with all the sugar or juice BC that has a lot of sugar.

If you are going to drink alcohol then red wine is the best. I am in the same boat - and I will only drink red wine now. However, no alcohol is OK - holy fat!!!

Drink only in moderation, and then only half of that. :p

One 8 ounce glass of red wine with dinner is fine. As long as you eat. It's safe. And make sure you drink plenty of water to flush your system between glasses.

Moderate drinkers of alcohol live longer than non-drinkers.

"An exhaustive review of all major heart disease studies has found that "alcohol consumption is related to total mortality in a J-shaped manner, where moderate consumers have a reduced total mortality compared with total non-consumers and heavy consumers."

Liquors with no mixers are the lowest fat, don't use tonic like they said below, it is actually has more sugar than most sodas.
