Who said women must cover their faces with a veil, and why was it said?.?

No stupid jokes please. This is a serious question and I think lots of people would like to know.

Well, some muslims believe that it is not compulsory to cover ones face with the veil, but others do. The truth is that the as muslims we believe that the Quraan is absolute and eternal, and we have been commanded to do so by Allah in the quraan. The reason being it guards ones chastity and modesty. In Islam we believe that women are special and tresured and just as one would keep their most most precious gems, pearls, diamonds out of the prying eyes of the public, we as women should do the same. Contrary to popular believe most women in the western world cover themselves not because theyre oppressed but out of choice. Our fellow Christians would know that the most respected women of their religion ( the nuns) have a modest dress code. Why is it then that when a muslim women dresses that way do we call her oppressed. Mary, the mother of Jesus(peace be apon the both of them) is always depicted wearing a head covering and loose clothing. We believe in our religion to the degree that we donot see a need to change and metemophasize the revelation and command of God. As you may know, the quraan has remained unchanged for over 1400 years.
O Prophet ! Tell Thy wives and daughters. And the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (face) when abroad, that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested.

O Prophet (saaw)! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over-garments; this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble; and Allah (swt) is Forgiving, Merciful." (33:59)
Beauty is obviously women’s face, and ornaments (her decorative elements: gold, silver etc) which can only add to her natural beauty.

And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their beauty and ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hand possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah (swt) all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful." (24:31)


To fully comprehend and understand the Quraan one has to read with it its explanation that learned scholars have written about after having looked into the life and sayings of the Prophet Muhammed and the history behind the verses. There are many verses that non muslims and even muslims quote without even knowing the reason for the revelation of that paticular verse. If one had to look into the life of the Prophet and his companions they would see that their women used to wear the veil.
And since every action of the Prophet was pure and only due to what Allah has commanded him and the lives that the men and women at that time lead in arcoddance to the Quraan it is clear that when the Quraan speaks of Beauty and Ornamants it includes the face.

btw if you think women who wear the veil are ugly ur realy shallow and display extreme ignorance. And It is not a tradition but part of a religious belief. There is really more to wearing the veil because of reasons stipulated by some of you.

And btw in Islam men too have a specific dress code.

Well i'm fuzzy on the exact source of this tradition, but i think it's the same kind of thing as Christian women wearing hats to church... women are considered so tempting that they must cover their beautiful hair, or face, if you will. Or any other glimpse of ankle, wrist, or nape of neck ! It's just that the men are apparently so easily tempted to sin by the mere sight of any part of a woman in general, so the women have to cover up & let the guys keep their minds on spiritual matters. Too bad the "worthy" are so f***ing weak, eh? :)

Allah in his infinite wisdom (I jest), decreed that it was more important for women to hide themselves than for anybody to work on providing food, making the desert flower, earning a living, etc.

Gods have strange likes and dislikes it seems. They spend their time moaning about the most infantile things. Unfortunately, some people are gullible enough to believe these myths and stories.

It's time that fairy tales were relegated to the dustbin of the history of primitive peoples.

And tell the believing women human beings to decrease their gaze and be modest, and to exhibit of their adornment purely that that's obvious, and to entice their veils over their bosoms, and to no longer show their adornment keep to their very own husbands or fathers or husbands fathers, or their sons or their husbands' sons, or their brothers or their brothers' sons or sisters sons, or their women human beings, or their slaves, or male attendants who lack power, or toddlers who be attentive to naught of girls human beings's nakedness. And enable them to no longer stamp their feet as a fashion to bare what they cover of their adornment. and change unto Allah jointly, O believers, only so ye might prevail)
