Jack Russel's like to play and sadly their not very bright .
He thinks your cat is another dog so treats it accordingly.
I have exactly the same pets as you so i know what you mean.
Our cat lives indoors as well as the dog.
And we find she will most of the time tolerate him, although she has on occasion swung a claw at him.
Perhaps you should try to have the cat inside more often so they can have chance to interact and then gradually get used to one another.
It won't stop the dog being stupid. But it might make the cat a little more tolerant of him. Then like with ours she'll probably ignore him most of the time.

Between walking my dog around the apartment complex and taking him to the dog park, I have come to the conclusion that Jack Russels dont like other critters. Even at the park they cant get along with other animals... at least where I go. Maybe you should try socializing your dog with other animals, taking him on Doggy field trips to the park or pet store. The dog sees the yard as his property and the cat is intruding. My dog and the cat play all the time, but god forebid the cat should get near the dogs food or water dish... The dog has to run him off. (The cat has his own stuff in another room).

I wouldn't suggest declawing you cat anyway. escpecially if he is outside. That is his only source of defence. In fact cats live 3x-5x as long inside as they do outside. but back to the problem. does he know the leave it command. I would suggest that one and being very firm about it. Also you might try keeping him on a leash. The other thing I would suggest is socializing your pet. They tend to do better w/ other animals if they are used to being around them. oh and he is a terrier. They are natural born hunters/ prey driven animals

Try getting the dog to stay away from him. Or make sure the cat is out of the yard before you let Pudge out. :]

Seems your dog just wants someone to play with. Ever consider getting another companion pet, indoors
Never declaw an outdoor cat! I am against declawing indoor cats as well.. I use to have tis done with mine, until one never quite over came the torment done to it. I promised, no more..

don't de-claw your cat...that is cruel and besides it is his ONLY defense!
unfortunately your dog WILL learn once the cat pops him. Cats can hurt a dog's eyes. i have a rat terrier that constantly likes to run over our cat too. she doesn't hurt the cat, just aggravates her.
maybe do some obedience research on the web, or better yet, take him to a trainer!
good luck
