I'm an artist and have been through college majoring in art-----soft pastels are more on the chalky side and tend to blend easier, but they rub off when touched or brushed (unwanted smudging). Oil pastels are more of a creamy texture and are slightly harder to blend, but stay on the paper and not-so-much on your hands and other things like soft pastels. It depends on what type of art you're doing as to which one would work best for you. I'd reccomend though that once you're finished, get a spray sealer and lightly spray your artwork to prevent smudging or fading of the colors. Hope this helps!! :)

Depends on how you use them. Kind of like asking which is better, oils or acrylics.
Pastels blend beautifully, and are the easiest way to make the softest, subtle tonal changes. Oil pastels can also be effectively blended, but it takes more work. The smoothness of these blends often depends on the "tooth" of the paper medium.
Pastels smudge easily. Oil pastels, not so easily.
There is no better. I will recommend, if you are considering a purchase, that you go with a very good name brand. Those that you get out of the kid's "artist kits" are litte better than sidewalk chalk and crayons.
Get a small set of each and practice on a couple of you favorite kinds of papers. Then decide.

you should experiment with both and figure it out for yourself. Oil pastels, like oil paints are smoother and have richer, more saturated colors. If by soft pastels you mean chalk pastels, then they have a tendency to be more flaky and closer to charcoal in texture. But, in art practice, the only way to decide which ones you like better is to experiment.

Those are 2 completely different disciplines. Oil will last longer as pastels fade quickly unless kept out of the light.

I personally prefer soft powdery pastels. I find them easier to work with and the colours blend in better (but it also smudges easily, too).

None are really better, it depends on the artist. I like oil though.

First one and then the other. It is the artist that will make the chosen medium come alive. So what difference does it make which one. The artist.........
