If you're looking to stay, as in spending a few nights, I would strongly recommed Rosslyn Castle, just outside Edinburgh. The castle is owned by the Landmark Trust and they let it out on a weekend or weekday basis. It's really cheap in the off-season. If you don't like Rosslyn they have other castles all over Britain.

You can stay in Durham Castle but only during university vacations as it is a student residence. It quite cheap too.

Sand castles are free! Seriously try the English Heritage Web site who offer tons of ancient buildings for rent, they tend to be tons cheaper in the winter!

there's a national trust type organisation that lets you stay in it's places for very little as it helps keep the castles in good repair. I'm racking my brains but I think if you google national trust and renting it might come up with it. sorry I can't be more help

I stayed in the turret room at Rufflets Country House in Scotland once... I can highly recommend it... it was very romantic... sadly I was alone at a bloody company event... but I would definately go back, the whole place was lovely.
