Except for the Civil War and prior, there are many rumors, but no proven cases. Go to the link below, and it will give you a history of the rumors that exist about that.

It happend in Germany. I believe it was during WWII. The 5th armor divicion abandoned it's base and left its flag there for the enemy troops. Up until the past few years they have not been alowed back on American soil (as a unit not the soldiers) Now with the reorganization of our forces in Germany they are comming back state side.

To the best of my knowledge, George Custer lost the colors of the 7th Cavalry at the battle of little bighorn. The 7th was stationed at a neighboring base, in Japan, before the Vietnam war.

As I was told, that unit cannot return to the states until it regains it's colors in battle. I'm not sure how that works, I'm not even sure if there's any creditability to the story. It is interesting just the same.

that rumor is false, and 5th Armored Division no longer exists...

a military unit is more concerned with it's unit's guidon or colors, which are destroyed before falling into the enemy's hand, i.e. Bataan in 1942.
