The precise identity of the "angel of the Lord is not specifically give in the Bible. However, there are many important "clues" as to his identity. The angel of the Lord speaks as God, identifies Himself with God, and exercises the responsibilities of God (Genesis 16:7-12; 21: 17-18; 22:11-18; Exodus 3:2; Judges 2:1-4; 5:23; 6:11-24; 13:3-22; 2 Samuel 24:16; Zechariah 1:12; 3:1; 12:8). In several of these appearances, those who saw the angel of the Lord feared for their lives because they had "seen the Lord." Therefore, it is clear that the angel of the Lord is a theophany, that is an appearance of God in physical form.It is interesting to note that appearances of the angel of the Lord cease after the incarnation of Christ. This leads some to conclude that the angel of the Lord represented appearances of Jesus before His incarnation in human form. Whatever the case, whether the angel of the Lord was a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ, or an appearance of God the Father, it is highly likely that the phrase “the angel of the Lord” identifies an appearance of God.

According to a book I have handy, it is a Biblical theophorism, commonly personified or identified as Michael, Malachi, Metatron, Akatriel, Gabriel, Yehadriel, Phinehas, Homadiel, and so on. As for the Old Testament, especially in the earlier books, it could be taken to mean, though not always, God Himself. Numbers 22:22 states that the Angel of the Lord is the adversary (in example, ha-satan, the name of Satan before he fell from heaven) acting for the Lord. In II Samuel 24:1, it is the Lord who provoked David to number Israel, and in I Chronicles 21:1, it is Satan who does the act of provoking. So basically, the Angel of the Lord is an angel acting for God, so it could represent nearly any angel known in heaven who carries out the will of God, especially those I had mentioned in the beginning.

An angel of the Lord is simply any messenger sent from God. There are specific messengers that are named but it would depend on the reference you are interested in. So the angel of the Lord references don't really refer to the same angel, it just happens to be whichever angel God is using at that moment for a mouthpiece.

Refers to an angel sent by the Lord on His behalf. I've always thought it was Gabriel.

The Angle of the Lord refers to the preincarnate Jesus Christ. This however in no way means that Jesus was ever an actual angle as Hebrews makes clear.

In many cases, the Angel of the Lord is translated from the Hebrew, Elohim, which is one of the Hebrew names for the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jabob.
