Fusion reactor would be environmentally friendly if they could ever get it to work.
There are many other alternative to produce electrical power.We have not got that horse going strong yet!
We have had great discoveries within the past since the americah civil war.
The enviromental problem are not our worst enemy.
The worst thing that can happen is when man turns away from his Creator and His Salvation. The results is havoc and blood baths on a global scale as we already have had a taste of it in the past.

1st Place: The potential for stem cells to cure chronic diseases is enormous [but because other complicating factors have been introduced it reemains to be seen what can be done in the US]
Stem cells can replace the cells that get worn out or die in age related & auto-immune diseases - these chronic conditions are the big killers & cripplers of our day, including dementias.
Honorable Mention: The energy efficient hybrid & electric cars are very exciting & I'm looking forward to seeing their development.
Honorable Mention: The more efficient solar cells of the future will also be impressive, as will some light sources just being developed.
Both of the H.M.s will save huge amounts of energy, C02 & pollution in the near future when energy prices will be soaring & environmental issues will continue to vex & degrade.

The next global achievement both for environment and human kind is finding a cheap/environmentally friendly fuel (something like knowing how to control a fusion reaction) as an alternative to fossil fuel which is going to deplete eventually.
