I am looking for a hand held, or desk top radio to have at my house, or on a plane so i can hear the airport towers.

If all you want to do is hear the communications the best bet is a VHF scanner. You can pick one up at Best Buy, Radio Shack, or nearly any electronics store. Just check to see that it includes the AIRBAND (118-136 MHz AM)

Much less expensive than a Nav/Com and unless you have a pilots lic. you wont be able to transmit on one (unless you like the possibility of a high $$ fine)

I think you can get some from one crashed aircraft ;) it's too cheap and real :D you know ;) ? for example for a skylane cessna is good . but bendix /king avionics made them :
