Join the Navy. You'll get special training in water survival. First you remove your trousers and knot the ends of the legs. Then you fill them with air and close off the waist end. Now you've got a floating device.

You'll also learn a technique of floating that uses very little energy and requires no motion on your part.

You'll practice by jumping off a 50 foot tower into water.

The chiefs in charge of training will make it more exciting by churning the swimming pool water with the fire hose on the wall.

Boy, the damn recruiter never mentioned this crap.

A rather extreme example that would freak anybody out. Are you still freaked out looking at the ocean from the safe shore?
I'd freak out if I was in the middle of the blue sky without a parachute but just looking at the stars fills me with wonder and awe - not fear.

keep yourself from drowning! i learned this in a military school where i had to live there for 6 mo. to get my g.e.d. if you're wearing jeans, take it off and tie the 2 ends together. with the open end(the waist part) fill it up w/air by slapping your hand into the water and keeping the open end downward. this will pull air into the pants and act as a floating device, just as you were to put an empty glass downward into water. no water will fill in the glass because the air has nowhere to escape. you get between the leg opening putting your arms over and hold the open end in front of you. you'll need to make sure you keep the pants wet so that no air leaks out and this will save you a lot of energy from keeping yourself out of the water. in the beginning, pulling your pants off, tieing it together, and filling water into it will be difficult, but it's better than keeping yourself afloat for a long time. if you don't know how to swim and you don't have pants on, then you're screwed.

There was a movie about that. They got left behind in the ocean. Basically, you can't survive for very long.

I know what you mean :) I'm not freaked out by water per se, but I do get kinda creeped out by the idea of being out alone in the water where no one can get to me. I think it's the idea of the vastness of it - but then the idea of being out in space creeps me out too LOL!
