Poker is descended from a game called Poquette that was played in France in the 18th century. It was introduced into the US through Louisiana at the begining of the 19th century. At first it was played by only four people and used only 20 cards, just the three face cards, tens and aces. It has evolved from this humble begining to the wide variety of variations we now have.
The reason some people think poker is bad is that it is a form of gambling.

Whatever makes you think poker is bad? It's just a card game.
I don't know who invented it but it's a great way to burn time if you've got some.
I've heard of soldiers playing poker in the wars while waiting for orders, I imagine prisoners play for smokes or whatever.
It's not as if you have to play for money.
I mean , is euchre a bad card game?

Poker is not bad!!! It is gambling, so I guess in some circles it would be considered bad. Cards, as far as I know, were used as games in Rome, japan, india china and egypt, so who knows....my bet would be that the game of poker was actually developed in England or post-medieval europe.
