It was the Battle of Kursk between the Red Army and the Germans.
There were as someone else said some epic tank battles in North Africa as well (no-where near the size of Kursk) but then some complete jerk states that it was between Patton and Rommel!!
Oh my god has U.S history really gone that Myopic?
The tank battles of North Africa happend between Montgomerys British 8th Army and Rommels Afrika Corps long before any U.S soldier set foot in a combat zone.
By the time the joint British and American invasion of Tunisa took place to cut them off from the rear the Afrika Corps were in full retreat and Rommel was on his way home with a tropical illness.

the Battle of Kirsk had the most number of tanks on both sides. It took place after Stalingrad and is seen by most historians (not Hollywood historians) as the turning point of the war in Europe.
