well my mother said that back then if you were committed to a hospital for insanity they had no cure or meds so you basically stayed locked up in a insane asylum for the rest of your life. now it is state law that you only stay 6 months and in some states they have to let you go I am not sure about all. my mother should know that answer she was born in 1922. good luck
