Numbers 31:19 And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person (nephesh), and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
Revelation 6:9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls (psuche) of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul (nephesh) that sinneth, it shall die....

Where is the bible is the soul said to be synonymous with the spirit? The spirit in the bible is the life of God and originates from the Holy Spirit. Once seperate from God, how can one live if the spirit (the life source) is gone? The soul is the indiviudual, the person, the being, etc, but the spirit makes you alive.

Is that not biblically correct?

souls are physical beings, they have physical brains, nerves, blood, etc. The spirit is what gives us life. Our spirit is limited due to sin, but if we had more, we could be like angels.

1) metaphor.

"Soul" doesn't neccesarily MEAN "soul" sometimes it merely means "person"

in your own quotes you have "nephesh" attached to both "person" and "soul" in which it MEANING "soul" in one of the cases, simply wouldn't make sense. and the other wouldn't make sense for the other meaning.

the spirit and soul are NOT synonomous, many people mistakenly use the 2 synonomously.

the soul is made of "spirit" and you could say, fueled by spirit as well.

and in a sense you could say the body is made of, and fueled by "spirit" as well, but not quite the same way the soul is.

>>"souls are physical beings, they have physical brains, nerves, blood, etc. The spirit is what gives us life. Our spirit is limited due to sin, but if we had more, we could be like angels."<<

this is incorrect as well. you are making an almost identical mistake to that which you are criticizing, (irony...)

souls are NOT physical entitys, the human body is a physical being. the brain is a function of the body, as are those other things. the soul is a non-physical entity "constructed" of "spirit" as the body is constructed of matter. and is "propelled" by spirit in the way our physical bodys are as food. ... but without consuming it as such. its hard to explain.

"spirit" is energy lent to us, by God, its part of god. the SOUL is who we really are, our real self, which resides in the human shell, like a driver in a car, you could say.

souls... the energy essence that is who we are, can indeed die, but not through the death of the body, or inperfection. it won't die under regular cirucmstances unless you really screw up.

its amazing how people who really have no clue on the topic, can claim to know.

Well the whole theory goes that the soul and the spirit are two separate things. The soul is the essence of you, what makes you, you. You personality and all the experiences that you have had in your life. The spirit is supposed to be that spark of life which comes from a Devinne source. Most people call this Devinne force God. Not that I actually believe all this stuff, but think of it like a glass that is turned upside down on a table trapping air underneath it. Think of the air around you like the Devinne spirit. The glass is your physical body and the shape of the glass in your soul. When you lift the glass you release the air back into the main body of air. For the spirit to be release the body must die. The soul is a fleeting thing, for once the spirit is released it losses its shape or the spirit losses the essence of what was you, but this is not a bad thing because once your are connected to all things, the essence of what was you is no longer needed, you understand all things. This is what some mean when they say return to God. Some theorize that the soul needs the human body to survive, but sometimes souls can stay on this plane by stealing energy from things that are still alive. Sounds kind of weird, but this is what I have ran into in my research. I'm agnostic myself, but this I have found this same exact theory in many different beliefs. Ether they know something we don't or the idea has been adopted down through history by all that have heard it.

Man is a three part being - body soul and spirit. They are all separate from one another and have differen functions. In James it says James 2:26 "For just as the body without the spirit is dead..." When the spirit leaves the body that is death. In Christians the spirit is the part that is saved and receives eternal life. John 3:6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit". 1 Cor 5:5 "...so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." The soul in unbelievers is what dies eternally and is thrown into hell along with the body. The soul that sinneth it shall die.

Adam and Eve were created souls that did sin.

After the created souls that sinned, souls are born in sin to die.

Salvation is the primise that souls will be resurrected from the dead.

Luke 8:50,52,54,55 With the maiden being dead, just said her spirit returned again.
Psm.104:29,30 Job 34:14,15 Isa.42:5 the spirit is the life of the soul, it belongs to God.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul (nephesh) that sinneth, it shall die

Those who do not repent of their sins, their souls shall die. Why try to confuse or complicate what God clearly says? Those who do not accept his son Jesus, God's wrath will be upon them.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Everlasting life is what the soul has through Jesus. With out acceptance of Jesus the soul dies.

These words CAN be used interchangably, especially in the Old Testament. In fact, they are used in a synonomous way in Isaiah 26:9, "With my soul (nepes) have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit (ruah) within me will I seek the early..."

Both Hebrew words mean breath, and can refer to the life of a man.

The word often translated soul can just mean a man or a person, as in the passage in Numbers you mentioned. In fact, the KJV uses 28 different words to translate the word nepes, which it often translates soul. It can have many different meanings, and any exact meaning is difficult to translate.

Really, a true distinction of body, spirit, and soul did not tend to take place until the Greek and Latin languages, and making such distinctions in the Hebrew is probably not warranted.

In the New Testament, it is usually one's spirit that is considered to be eternal, not one's soul.

You are only sort of correct, to me. The soul is the spirit, it's all the same thing. Quantum physics calls it "the observer" and we say it is what is looking out from your eyes at us.

Do you remember that verse that says those who were most humble in this life will be honored in the next and those who were most honored in this life will be the lowest in the next? (I know, I'm not quoting exactly). The reason why is that the soul of the most humble will be the brightest and biggest in the next, while the soul of the honored one in this life is actually quite small and therefore will be the lowest in the next life.

There is a part of you that will return to God when you die; how much of it is left is up to you ... if there is nothing there then God will say "I don't know you".

In the cases of Ezekiel and Numbers, the word Nefesh refers to a person. True, in modern hebrew Nefesh refers to soul, but inbiblical it refers to human beings. Biblical hebrew uses many words to describe the mortal body, nefesh, adam, goof, and in these cases, it chooses to use the word nefesh possibly because it entails both male and female genders. There is a concept that the soul is intrinsically tied to the body, but in these cases, the message is the death of the body, and not the soul.

This scripture is speaking of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God- Their soul will not live on in heaven....Where as those who are saved in Christ, will live eternally in heaven with Him.

There are many out there who believe that all flesh goes to hell, but all souls go to heaven- This is New Age - and its false doctrine. I am glad that God has written this verse in Ezekial- This is a great verse to refer to, for those out there who have made up their own relegion to suit themselves.
