Time, like any dimension, is very hard to define. We humans have arbitrarily chosen intervals between events and call this time. Our remote ancestors reckoned time by observing the phases of the moon and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. In this way, they learned the best time for hunting, the best time to plant and harvest crops, etc.

As man became civilized it became obvious that some kind of time standardization would become necessary, so they determined what durations between events would be the most convenient and easy to measure (with sundials, burning candles, water clocks, etc.)

As technology kept up with the gradual advance of civilization, it became necessary to be more precise in measuring time. A number of methods were tried, and the clock (and watch) entered the picture. Now we have atomic clocks that measure standardized time with extreme precision.

However, defining time as an entity is still virtually impossible. We still employ arbitrary (but now standardized) methods to measure intervals of time: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, etc.

It's the thing that keeps everything from happening all at once.

Some think that it's an illusion: that everything really does happen all at once. Everything is in the present and it's just our perception of time that allows us to gradually take in this event where everything's always taking place.
