Does anyone have much experience with teaching ESL in Turkey? I am thinking about traveling there to teach next year after I graduate. I would love to hear about the experiences of others. What type of reactions will people have to two young American (Biracial) girls teaching there (My sister is planning to come too). Is there anything we should avoid doing while we are there?

Completely ignore Harolas answer, what a load of Bull!! I did it for nearly 3 years with private students on a 1 to 1 basis, you'll not earn much but the laughs you'll have & the buzz you get when they start to talk to you is great! They recognise TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) certificates & you will be asked to produce a copy. Make sure that you have permission to work in Turkey as a foreigner because if you don't & you get caught you may find yourself dealing with some unhappy customs & immigration officials. Enjoy.

I've worked as an English teacher in Turkey. The legal requirements to teach in Turkey are a minimum of degree and TEFL certificate. The most widely recognised TEFL qualifications are the Cambridge Celta and the Trinity Tesol. They can be obtained in a few weeks full time or longer part-time. They really help you in teaching - do not consider online courses or anything else that doesn't include teaching practice. If you come to Turkey to teach, I'm sure you'll find it rewarding. The salary is not great but it's enough to live on. Most of the jobs are in the major cities; Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Good luck!

I am studing now in "English Time" Private Course in istanbul/Turkey.
All our teachers are foreigners: from USA, New Zeland, United Kingdom, Canada, Scotland, Irland and etc....
They like my country so much. But before comming here they thought that Turkey is so close traditional country, and they was afraid a bit. But now they dont want to return back. They says that Turkish people are so friendly and modern.

i was in turkey for tourism, it was ok, they re not so raving about muslim religion like other arabic countries.at least in istambul. i bet u will have a lot of males attention. maybe u want it. males in turkey re very handsome i noticed, women re not so beautiful, so that's why probably they re paying so much attention to foreign women. or maybe it's just cos they want to get out of the country. i don't know. but im sure u will be fine there
