Stick with something without a lot of added scent, they never work very well and will irritate your skin. I love Aveeno, its all-natural and works well.

The best thing that I've found is Johnson's baby oil products. I even soak in a warm bath with some baby oil in it. Be careful because it is very slippery! Canned shortening is also good. It is pure oil with no fragrance or additives. A wonderful facial mask is plain yogurt that still has a good expiration date. The live enzymes eat away dry skin cells. Apply a thin layer of yogurt and leave on for about 10 - 15 minutes. Wash off with warm water....your face will be as soft as a baby's behind. Also stay out of hot water which strips the skin of moisture. The use of moisturizing body washes etc. is also good.

I recommend Eucerin lotion if it's extremely dry skin that's not associated with eczema. It's definitely not for mildly dry skin. I use it when I get out of the shower and it lasts all day...no joke.
But if you have eczema, you're not supposed to use lotion because it has alcohol in it. If you're not sure if you suffer from eczema or not, you should consult with your doctor. If you do suffer from eczema, and you know it for a fact, try using the Eucerin CREAM... not the lotion.

For the body I suggest olive oil. I like to make sugar scrub for the shower using just olive oil and sugar to make a paste. I get into the shower and rub it all over my body using a circular motion on dry skin before I turn the shower on. Then I turn the water on and rinse it off. Don't soap up after this or it will just wash it all off and be careful because your shower will be slippery. Clean your shower afterward with dishsoap to break up the oil and get rid of the slippery film. Also, drink lots of water. Lotions only provide a barrier to prevent moisture from escaping, they don't actually add moisture to your skin.

Avoid lotions if your skin is dry because lotions tend to dry skin out...try a rich moisturiser like Ponds.

A lot of the fragranced lotions have alcohol in them, which will irritate your skin more. I like Eucerin, it's really frothy.
I like cortizone creams as well, but not for prolonged use.

Cetaphil makes a great moisturizer. It's the only thing that works for me in the winter.
