Growing up my parents were very against religion. The sight of a church or a cross disgust them. Going through traumatic situations and always coming out better I have believed in a higher power and it has helped. I have seen many what I believe connections to God and I would like to convert to a religion. To be honest I do not know much about religion and do not understand any bible I have read. So, I am wondering how do I find and get involved with a religion?

Thank You for any help you can offer.

Read, study, and analyze many religions and philosophies until you find a set of beliefs or disbeliefs that works for you.

Do not convert to anything because someone tells you that it is true. Determine the truth for yourself.

If you are looking for a religion that will make you feel good inside, that is the easiest thing, just visit churches until you find one. But if you are really looking for a religion that is true and is straight with the Bible then my advice to you is too check out the Sabbatarians. Do your Bible study with a Strong's ( it helps you with the meaning of words in the Bible) a Bible with Strong's notations, and a dictionary that was printed in 1950 or farther back. I would also suggest that you use a KJV or the Interlinear by Green. Always ask God to help you when you are going to study His word, never go it alone, God will send His Spirit to help you.

If you don't understand the parts of the Bible you've read, you may have been reading a KJV (King James Version). If you go to www.biblegateway.com, you will see towards the top of the page a blank field and a drop-down box. It is probably already set to NIV, and that is a good version, but the Amplified Bible is nice because it really explains and expands on different words to help you understand what you're reading. So let's say you want to learn about what the Bible has to say about love. You type in love in the blank field, select your version from the drop-down box (it has tons of different languages, too), and click "Search the Bible".
Also, hang out here and read anything on Religion and Spirituality that catches your interest. But remember that not many of us have degrees from a university about this stuff, and lots of us are just plain wrong, even if we don't realize it.
I hope that you end up knowing my God and His Son, Jesus. :o)

Why, for the love of everything reasonable and logical, would you feel compelled to muck about in the delusional superstitionist sewer that is religious belief? God is the end result of a failed search for truth by a very shallow mind, provided that any search was made at all instead of swallowing the pile of delusional bilge that was spoon fed to you as a child. Religion is the ultimate con, it is government protected, tax free and the product they sell doesn't have to be delivered until you reach a place that doesn't exist. No wonder so many people jump on this manured money wagon. To find god, you must put on your god helmet. To do this, just stretch your sphincter muscle over your ears.

"Religions A - Z" James Beverley is a great book on that very subject.

If you are interested in reading about Christianity...

www.bible.com

Might be helpful in finding a Bible that is easy to read and understand. The New Living Translation (NLT) and New International Version (also a translation) are easier to read than say the King James Version.

I would recommend when reading it to get into the New Testament and go to the book of John, then Acts, Romans, Matthew, Mark and Luke. You can read and research for free with the above web addy.

John 14:6 Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Christian = follower of Jesus Christ and His teachings. It's all about free will!

Religion is man's way of trying to reach God.

Relationship is God's way of reaching us through Jesus Christ.

He (Jesus) is seek you for a relationship.

Read about Islam, and plz when you do, look for reliable resources, not just any book that claims it's about Islam. Also visit:
www.islam-online.net, there's a section called "ask about Islam" ,and another called "my journey to Islam", people like you who were wondering and found the right path.

Islam is a Religion that believes in Jesus, Moses and the seal of all prophets, Mohammad (may peace be upon them all). It's a Religion that guides in every aspect of your life, it's not just about spiritualities. That is why Religion exists.

You can also try amrkhaled.net

Good luck and may God light your path.

The Belief-O-Matic may not come with a Ginsu knife, but it has helped many a person match their core beliefs to existing religions and moral philosophies. Give it a try. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html

I also second Journey's recommendation of Unitarian Universalism. UUs are very diverse and open. They don't tell you what to believe; they help you find your own path and appreciate the admirable things that can be found in most religions and philosophies. If you're in the States, use the following link below to find a UU congregation or fellowship in your area. http://www.uua.org/CONG/

Best of success on your spiritual journey.

I was the same way and I wanted to find the true religion. Also some of my friends were the same way. We seen so much hyprocrity in religion that and the way the preachers were rich and preaching people into war. Saying don't be imoral and they were. Then I started to study the bible and realized that God hates violence. He had his nation war against violent nations.
But after Jesus came he cast of the Jews and took people out of all nations to worship him. Giving then laws about love.
Love your enemies. I began to think? why did he destroy the world of Noah's time? It said Because the world was full of violence because of them. So he hates violence.
Then in Abraham's time, the angels went to lot to visit him.
The men of the city wanted to have sex with them. They were homosexuals. On learning more about this they practice sex worship and had orgys and pedofiles. So God destroyed those cities. So he hates immoral sex. Wouldn't the true religion speak out against adultry, divorce [bible says God hates a divorceing} Since he wrote the ten commandments with his finger on stone, I figured he wanted us to remember those laws.
They were about lieing, stealing, murder, adultry, materialism.
When Jesus came to the earth he comdemed the religious leaders because they were money lovers, and more concerned about politics than helping the poor. In fact they robbed from the poor to give to the rich. In a short time False religion will go down as the pretener that she is.
Wouldn't you like to know about a religion that is non-violent, believes moral laws are to be obeyed, with preachers that are not paid. Believes this earth will one day be a paradise like the one God had planned for Adam. It changed my life and gave me hope. Not just for me but for my friends, we now have a hope as well as each other. We would like you to join us. You can find out about this more by clicking into this website.

Hi. I know how you feel. The King James version of the Bible was translated in the 1600's! Good luck understanding that. I was in the same boat, until I came across this man. His name is Ray Stedman. He passed away but he was a very famous and gifted preacher/teacher. He really helped me understand things.

Here is a link to his website:

He was a very intelligent man who knew both Latin and Greek and at the same time, he was a "simple" southerner. Very easy to listen to, and understand. Good luck to you.

Well, first there are hundreds of religions. If it were me I would look for one that did not rely upon dogma or hate. I would also recommend Unitarian Universalists churches. They teach all religions and pride themselves upon searching for truth. UU members are atheists, agnostics, liberal christians, buddhists, pagans/wiccans and much more. It's interesting that UU churches have such varied members that grow together in faith with no hatred or harassment! They are open and loving people. Good luck!
