It seems that both believers and non-believers both have quoted the Book of Leviticus quite often on here. I was just curious, obviously, this particular book of the Bible has some items no longer followed by most modern Christians. Is there a standard practice for following certain tenets while overlooking others? Do other religions do this as well?

Good question! Sorry so late to respond...

It is important to understand how God forms covenants with His people. And there are different requirements for each covenant, which may or may not be mutually exclusive to one another. For instance, the requirements of the covenant God established with Samson did not apply to other individuals, and do not apply to us today. What is unique about the New Covenant, however, is that through it Jesus came not to abolish the requirements of the Old Covenant but to fulfill them...the revelation of this is quite profound.

For instance, there are many things under the Old Covenant law that require stoning when violated. It is also true that animals were often sacrificed for the “atonement” of sins. In accordance with this principle, Jesus, the “Lamb of God” and mediator of the New Covenant, was put to death to atone for all sins. And so rather than changing the law, Jesus took the punishment for all sins and fulfilled the law. Thus, as there is now no need to stone sinners, Jesus commands us to forgive one another (as He demonstrated in the account from John 8 where the adulterer is brought before Him).

Furthermore, those who followed Judaism at the time accused Jesus of breaking the law by doing work on the Sabbath (when He healed a person). Rather than telling his accusers that the law of the Sabbath was no longer in effect, He responded, “Stop judging on mere appearances, and make a right judgment!” You see, even in that day it was acceptable under the law to work on the Sabbath day in order to save a life….which is what Christ did through this healing. For the real miracle of that healing was that it brought a person to know eternal life. The revelation of Christ teaches us that life is more than flesh and blood. Jesus said, “Unless you are born of both the flesh and the Spirit you shall in no way enter into the kingdom of God.”

Of course, only Christ can lift the veil so that we may understand how God has tied all things together from Genesis to Revelation. For as Paul wrote of the Israelites, “…their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away.”

God Bless!
