Jesus was on the cross three hours with non fatal wounds. He did escape the cross where normally people would last for many days.
In order to prolong the agony, Roman executioners devised two instruments that would keep the victim alive on the cross for extended periods of time. One, known as a sedile, was a small seat attached to the front of the cross, about halfway down. This device provided some support for the victim's body and may explain the phrase used by the Romans, "to sit on the cross." Both Eraneus and Justin Martyr describe the cross of Jesus as having five extremities rather than four; the fifth was probably the sedile.

blunt asnwer to your exact question -- No, if Jesus escaped the Cross He would not be popular becuase we would not know Him.
He had ample opportunity to "escape" as you say however, He choose to die for YOU and I. while some appreciate and try to accept and show our appreciation, some just sneer at the gift. there will be a time when, that gift is needed and it won't be able to be gotten back.
God bless you that you find the gift before it's too late.

The Christian Church in its founding was as much a political institution as a religious one. The founding fathers would have had to find a different martyr. Jesus would have been blissfully spared all the notoriety and lived happily ever after....and possibly died at Masada a very old man, lost to history as so many of his brethren.

I know your aim is to incite anger 'cause your an idiot, but here goes my answer. The reason he was so popular was because he fulfilled many, many prophecies which made it undeniable that he was who he said he was. Had he "escaped" off the cross, he would not have fulfilled the prophecy.

That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah"; but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not.
Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise. Qur'an 158-4

A person who spends their lifetime wondering "what if this had happened" accomplishes nothing.
