Not for someone who doesn't know how to train.

Those are very very ineffective unless used in limited circumstances in the hands of an experienced trainer.

If you can afford to go to someone go - they don't train the dog, they train YOU to train the dog. There are techniques and the way you hold the leash, use the collar, move your hands, pitch your voice and a host of other things that you can NOT get from a book, a CD or an instruction manual.

When I taught, I spent 20 minutes of each class demonsrating a new thing and having the students try it. The next 40 minutes they practiced everything we had done in the course and I corrected their technique. This went on for 12 weeks, once a week. You are going to find that it in manual????.

Don't look for shortcuts with electronic toys - it doesn't work and in the end fails unless you want to spend your dog's whole life carrying some gadget around - and the same with clickers and treats.

Learn to use your voice and hands and how to show your dog what you want and how to get him to do what you want and when to correct and when to praise and how to correct and how to praise.

DIY doesn't work when you don't know what you are doing because you have never done it before. Would you try to repair a car or build you own house from a book?

From your posts, it leads me to believe that you DO need to go to dog training classes. The classes are really not for the dog, but for you to learn how to properly train a dog. You will be doing it yourself, under the supervision of a trainer. I train and compete with my dogs in AKC events and STILL go to a trainer because even the best trainer needs some aid and supervision from others.

i used a pet trainer and learnt alot from her. she taught US how to teach our dog ourselves to stop him being boisterous with visitors, pulling on the leash. being aggressive to other dogs, being very vocal for attention and not running away as soon as the front door was opened. after a 3 hour sesson we carried on with what she taught us and hey it worked. was hard work but the best thing we ever did. learning from a proffesional is the best way. if you dont and you get some bits wrong then your dog wont learn at all.
