My condolences to you and your father.

Could you please let us know what kind of home education you prefer? Textbooks, Christian or Secular base, etc.? There are so many options to choose from. Are you aware that Texas has virtual schools http://www.texasvirtualschool.org/ ? They also have dual enrollment for juniors and seniors in homeschool/highschool.

Check your local homeschool group or google for homeschool teachers in your area. I'm in Florida or I'd be able to better help you.

With a six year old you do not have to do a whole lot of formal learning. Learning to read is the 1st grader's most important academic job. Learning a little about numbers may be second. Continuing to enjoy learning about the world, observing similarities and differences, drawing conclusions and pictures, etc are important as well. The formal learning part can be managed easily if you carefully select good materials. The sports, dance, and other activities do a good job of providing for interaction with other kids. Be willing to try lots of different things. There are actually a fair number of us out here that have medically fragile children. When we need to protect our children, we tend to keep them home or separated from the "pack" until it is safe for the fragile one. Go to The Homeschool Store on Judiway. Ask one of the ladies there to help with choosing good curriculum that you can follow. Saxon puts out an easy to use-"script provided" phonics based reading instruction. Saxon also has a 1st grade math curriculum that I can personally recommend. Make sure you don't get too much and overwhelm yourself or your daughter. If you don't feel like you can homeschool on your own, there are tutors and others on the bulletin board that offer their services. Good luck.

I'm so sorry about your mother. My first suggestion to you would be to "quit" school for a couple of months. When you lose a parent, it takes a while to recover and get back to something resembling normal. Give yourself time to adjust to this loss before starting school. That's the beauty of homeschooling - when something happens, you can put school on the back burner for a while, until you're ready (and able) to start up and focus again.

When you DO start back up, your first assignment should be to read, "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" by Grace Llewellyn. It covers, step-by-step, how to unschool in all the basic subject areas (no textbooks, no tests, no teachers, just life and your own interests).

Best wishes to you.
