The reason you feel good on painkillers is because they mimic your body's endorphins. When you are in pain, your body releases endorphins to make you feel better; your very own morphine! When you take morphine or another morphine-like drug (they're called opioids) they may make you feel euphoric (really happy and up) as well as relieve your pain. As you can imagine, this is also why they are abused by many people. Feeling euphoric when you take opioids doesn't mean you're depressed. If you feel sad or hopeless most days, can't enjoy things that you used to like, are sleeping and eating more or less than is normal for you, and if you've felt like this for at least wo weeks, you may be depressed, and you should see your doctor.

Painkillers cause your brain to release endorphins, that's why they make you feel good and like you have more energy. It's very good that you are recognizing this now. Lots of people use painkillers to treat their depression instead of an anti-depressant or therapy, and then not too long after, they find they are addicted to the painkillers and can't get off. I think it would be a very good idea to tell your doctor what you just told us. They can give you an anti-depressant, maybe, that will help.
Also, depression can cause pain, or cause it to feel worse than it would normally, so if you go on an anti-depressant it is very likely you won't need as many pain pills, or might even be able to get off of them completely. Addiction sucks big time - call your doc today. Good luck!!

Painkillers numb the part of the brain that is warning you there a problem going on somewhere in the body so when you take the painkillers that part of the brain can relax and you get to enjoy the rest of your day until you take the next pill.

You're probably talking about opiates. They make you happy because they stimulate feelings of pleasure in your brain. It's nice, but it's addictive, so be careful and only use them as prescribed. If you find that you are sad the rest of the time, consider that you might be depressed, and get that evaluated. If you find that you are craving the painkillers for the happiness, stop taking them, or if you still need them for pain, talk to your doctor and explain the situation, so he/she can get you something else or refer you to someone who can help you manage the pain.

Because you are taking a narcotic. That's like a heroin addict asking "why do I feel relaxed when I shoot-up?" Opiod analgesics have the same or very similar chemichal composition as their street drug counterpart. Be very cautious with these "medications" as they can change your body's chemical composition and make it difficult to function normally without the drug. The less drugs the better. Stay healthy!
