Download.com is probably the safest bet. A recent survey showed that over 55% of 'free screensaver' sites actually included a trojan hidden in the screensaver. Its one of the most unsafe downloads you can get.
Update your security software. Check everything you download before you install or run it, and scan your pc regularly.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Zone Alarm firewall is free for personal use and stops unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. It's fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

www.download.com/ has some good ones, they don't have a big selection, but the ones they do have are excellent. Here is one that makes realistic flames on your desktop when in screensaver mode:

I bought a cd of screensavers at best buy. I got sick of all the spyware online.
