try a smaller dog, and not one who has a double coat, like a golden retriever. go to www.akc.com and search around for breeds will tell you about how the coat is if they shed alot and about the dog. just start searching.

You also need a dog that meets your lifestyle and personality. A lot of people get a dog because it is cute or it is popular. But if the dog likes to run and needs daily exercise and you are a couch potato, I don't think your relationship will be a lasting one.
I don't exercise much. If I had Jack Russell (for an example) I would probably return him/her the next day.............
You need to read AND talk to people about the different breeds. I have a Maltese. I did my homework before I got him. He DOES not shed. He has fur like human hair so he can't take extreme hot or cold weather. He is full grown and weighs 8.50 pounds. He is the MOST wonderful dog I have ever had. Whatever I want to do, so does he. If I sleep until noon, so does he. If I want to take him to the pet store, we go and he walks around like a well behaved little guy. If I want to play outside, he will too. He gets tired quickly because they are very lay backed dogs. He loves every animal and every human he sees. He talks to me and tells me what he wants. If I don't understand him, he takes me (like Lassie) and shows me...........
You can get a custom made dog if you research and match the dog to you. I am actually thinking of getting another one. The other important thing, KNOW your breeder. Visit more than once and get the history of the family. If you don't you will pay. There are very bad breeders out there. I was lucky and found a wonderful one.
By the way, he also thinks he is a watch dog. If someone walks by our house, he barks and wants me to do something about it.
He has the attitude of a giant. He thinks he is the owner and we are his staff....(some times I think he is right.)
HATEYSMUR:
WHAT IS IT LIKE HAVING TWO MALTESE IN THE SAME HOUSE. YOU DO NOT HAVE AN EMAIL LISTED.

In my experience, a poodle puppy is very sweet, does not shed, and is a good pet for a first time dog owner because they are easy to train.

A poodle... they don't shed at all; you just brush out the loose/dead hair. Also they are very smart and friendly... These dogs aren't just a small breed though, so if you want a larger breed, then they have the Standard Poodle. (Toy, Miniture, or the Standard) This breed also has many different colors too! You can go to http://mypoodles.com/ to find more about poodles.

All dogs shed, the ones the shed the least are ones that need grooming...poodles, yorkies, schnauzers etc.
Check the pound...rescue a dog and give it lots of love. Shorter hair means less shedding...sometimes.

I know that Shih Tzus don't shed at all because they have actual hair instead of fur. But they are notorious for difficult potty training and weight gain, so you may want some help from experienced Shih Tzu owners before making a decision to buy one.
