You joined the Marines so if they needed you carry a radio on your back then that is your job. It is probably the most important jobs that way you can call for support or for extraction if your unit is in a tough situation. With the GWOT there isn't alot of use for mortarmen right now but riflemen. You will be crosstrained on all Marine infantry weapons in SOI.

My husband was a gunner when in Iraq for 18 months. I don't think thats the best job to have, but he liked it because all he had to do was watch out for himself and shoot. It isn't the safest job, not that any are, but isn't the gunner the worst spot? Good Luck, make it home safe!!

I was in the USMC infantry.

You learn all the skills. That way you can do what ever is necessary in combat.

Machine gunner is nice but it puts you in weapons platoon. A regular grunt is a little better. Your more flexible, not tied down to a weapon that is not easy to move.

All marines are basically infantryman. The Corp will put you where they want, You really have no choice. You can request for certain duty, but like they say, the needs of the corp comes first.

Learn all of the grunt jobs. You will earn a faster promotion and be a better Marine for it.

I once saw a mortarman carrying a base plate fast rope out of my helo and "turtle" on the rope. He burned into the ground and trashed his back.

I would also look into how you can get into ROTC from the USMC and become an officer. Better pay and treatment.

Put your request in to your 1st sgt., if he's acceptable to the idea he will put you on the list, if not, don't give up your day job!

Remember grunt, statistically, machine gunners don't have the longevity of ordinary riflemen.

You really are in the Corps?

Then you would know that wherever the Corp puts you is where you belong!

Even if its Messkit Repairman thirdclass out in Barstow California.

OH yeah, you just show up and tell them what you want. There is this lady in light blue, and she's got like a clipboard and when you get off the bus she takes your order. Be sure to order a nice beverage at the same time, along with setting your wake up time.

Yeah....sure....
