I had a similar situation with my daughter. She was afraid of pools. She wouldnt even let me hold her. Eventually, I just pulled her into the pool, and made her realize that she could touch the bottom, and I wasnt going to let anything harm her. She is now the family fish, and never wants to get out. Maybe you could hold a bug, and let her see that they wont harm her. Not exactly the same thing as the pool, but the technique could work.

This is a tough one, but how we got past it with our three year old was to glorify them. First we bought and rented movies like 'Antz', 'A Bug's Life', and "Charlotte's Web"; then we went out and got her some of the "nice" bugs from the Disney store. Ladybugs and butterflies are a good starting point. After she got used to those we introduced the more realistic looking plastic bugs. They have clear cannisters full of them at Target, Wal-Mart and Toys-R-Us. Then we bought a bug catching kit and showed her how to catch bugs. She's completely unfazed by them now. She's even been bitten and stung a couple of times and practically laughed it off. Good luck, and have fun; they're only little once!

U could reassure her by telling her that you used to be scared of bugs, but that you realize that you are much bigger than them. So is she. If she sees a bug & it's not one that could sting or bite you, maybe pick it up and let it crawl on your hand a bit before setting it free outside. Look up some insect research sites on the web that detail helpful tasks that spiders & other insects perform. Best wishes! :)

My niece, who is the same age of your daughter got over her fear of bugs just by seeing my son (age 5) playing with bugs. She saw that he was fine and the bugs weren't hurting him. It took her a little while to warm up, but eventually she started to think they were pretty cool and before you knew it her fear was gone.

well the fear probably started with someone else's reaction to them. I dont like them either but to get my son over his similar fear i actually went outside with him in the summer and we played with the bugs. Yes it was VERY gross but he's no longer afraid of bugs.

get a old mayonaise jar and punch holes on the top. put some grass and a small stick, catch a bug and let her watch it from afar...she will get comfortable watching it, she will learn it can not harm her when it is in the jar...she might name it and become more comfortable around bugs

Simply put a bug in the palm of your hand and show your kid that there's nothing to be afraid of.

I have the same problem with my three-year-old. They are scary little creatures, especially the ones that bite! I don't think her fear is all too uncommon.

Just show that when you pick up insects and hold them that you are ok. But it would be really bad if she was to go around picking up spiders.
