Something chewable. How about a teething ring? Maybe a colorful picture to hang on his wall, babies love color. Good luck.

At five months my son was only just starting to bat at toys on his play gym, and didn't really have much interest in toys. My daughter however adores rattles and anything she can shake that makes a noise. Both of my kids LOVED the Lamaze brand toys, especially the "Spin and Explore" tummy mat- my som played with it until he was 2 1/2 when I passed it on to my sister in law. My Lamaze play gym was a pretty poor play gym, but the kids loved the toys attached to it. As to stocking stuffers, for my 9 month old I'm doing a sippy cup, a heinz incredibowl, a Christmas themed plush toy and a rattle. Those would all be appropriate for a 5 month old as you are going to start using these things in the near future anyway!
