Well... I stumble on a question by somebody saying he wants to get back in the army after getting what he calls a "general discharge" from the USAF, and wondering if he can get a security clearance. So I wonder, why "general" and not just "dishonorable"? and I can tell for sure it wasn't an honorable or health motive discharge. So, what are the non honorable discharge varieties?

Dishonorable...worst

Other than Honorable...

This one has a lot of subcategories, of which, (I believe) General is one, and Admin would be another (mind you, I'm doing this from memory, not research)

These OTH discharges usually have reasons attached to them...circumstances which led to the discharge. Often, if the circumstances have changed, the people can get back in.

ah, here we go...from Wikipedia

1. Honorable

To receive an honorable discharge, you must have received a rating from good to excellent for your service. Even though you only qualify for a general discharge, you may receive an honorable discharge under two circumstances. 1-When you are being separated because of a disability incurred in the line of duty. 2-When you receive any awards for gallantry in action, heroism, or other meritorious service

2. General (under honorable conditions)

You receive a general discharge when you separate from the service, under honorable conditions, without a sufficiently meritorious military record to deserve an honorable discharge. Some personnel think because a general discharge is given under honorable conditions, it is as good as the honorable discharge itself. However, that assumption is not true. A general discharge indicates satisfactory service but not to the established standard of the military service.

3. Other than honorable

You receive an other than honorable discharge for misconduct or security reasons.

4. Bad conduct

You receive a bad conduct discharge (BCD) when you separate from the service under conditions other than honorable. You receive a bad conduct discharge only by an approved sentence of a general or a special court-martial.

5. Dishonorable

You receive a dishonorable discharge (DD) when you separate from the service under dishonorable conditions. You may receive a dishonorable discharge only by a general court-martial and as appropriate for serious offenses calling for dishonorable separation as part of the punishment.

There can any multitude of reasons to get a dishonorable discharge. There are many different types of military discharge (in order): o Honorable Discharge o General Discharge (Under Honorable Conditions) o Under Other than Honorable Conditions o Bad Conduct Discharge o Dishonorable Discharge The worst is the Dishonorable in which case the recipient cannot receive any veteran benefits and the discharge cannot be upgraded. I have known two people to get Dishonorable discharges. One was for the theft of $16,000 worth of other Soldier's gear, military explosives, government equipment. The other individual (I will not call him a Soldier) was court-martialed for 7 counts of disrespect to an NCO (Sergeant), 1 count of disrespect to an Officer and 1 count of disrespect to a civilian. You can only get a Bad Conduct Discharge and Dishonorable Discharge through a court-martial.

dishonorable discharges are rarely given out.

If he has a General under Honorable Conditions, then it depends on the RE-code and the SPD code on his DD214.
