I'm curious why no one has mentioned the signs in some towns that demanded that blacks leave town before sundown...a few small towns in California discriminated against blacks until the 1960s in housing and employment. The Irish, Italians, Poles were all discriminated against at one time ,19th century. Strong backs were needed to build the massive industrial complex we have today. The Chinese, also a target for discrimination, were needed for the gold fields. Perhaps the need has passed for Mexican workers, but I doubt it according to current information on agriculture and the hotel industry. In a hundred years this will all pass.

People complained too. And no, germans and italians were not the model citizens everyone has you believe. Cosa Nostra, anyone? An import from Italy, Sicily to be more exact. There was also a German-American Nazi party, and a lot of "German-Americans" sympathized and eventually joined Hitler in Europe. They also did not learn English as everyone now says "Ja" instead of Yes!
People, think before you speak (or write for that matter).

Well, to the extent culture change is an issue, its because Germans were here all along. In fact there was debate in setting up the country whether official documents should be written in German or English, but English won due to their being more English here.
Italians were treated badly as were some later Germans. You never heard the names 'Wop' and 'Kraut' before? (As a Kraut, I feel free to use that one, and my apologies to any Italians I may have offended.)
There were no subsidized services for them to drain then, and a whole slew less came then than are coming now. Also, we now consider ourselves 'full' and aren't looking for more people in bulk, only skills in particular areas. Those are a few differences. People coming illegally is a HUGE difference.

When Italians Germans Irish and every nationality you can think of first came....They were treated poorly as well.
I think think of quite a few racial remarks for all of those nationality's.
For example...Italians were called WOPS, Guineas, wet backs, Guido's and are still considered somehow connected with the mob.
The Irish were called micks and some other things I cant think of.
Lots of nationalities weren't able to get good jobs simply because of where they came from.

Germans invent and build things with absolute detail and precision craftmanship and Italians cook good food . I am of Italian descent and my skin is not white it's olive. People did complain over Italians, Irish, and Poles coming to America. Obviously you only read your revisionist history. People hated when Itailans, Sicilians, Irish, and Polish people came at the turn of the last century and there were many riots in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston over these "white" immigrants.

Italians and Germans did not came just to America! They went to Argentina, Australia, Brazil and other South America countries. They probably came here forced, not their first choice! It has being a while, about a century. Now they are not treated bad as before. Now is another race, Mexicans. And in the future will be another...

What is your problem today, friend? People complain about everything all the time and always have. There is a difference between immigration and illegal entry of a country. Tell me how we could be invaded by millions of brown hispanics without us realizing it? And how does it make us racist to complain about an invasion of people of any color? Why should we accept it just to prove that we are not racist? We have nothing to prove, the illegals broke the law and no skin color can make what they did right!

You really need to do more research, every ethnic group had a previous group that thought they didn't have a right to come to the United States and take their jobs. Whether it was the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, whoever.

My family immigrated here from Ireland. I'm sure there were people complaining but we did it legal. We didn't sneak across the border and live here on someone elses dime. People complain about illegal immigrants. Many immigrants were treated poorly when they got here, what makes you think they weren't?
