People don't really want to change. How did the saying go '' you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink '' ? How educated are the people ? I hear all the time how they skip breakfast to save on calories. Now that's educated !! Or how about walking ( 200 calories ) and then rewarding themselves with a hot fudge sundae ( 1500 ? calories ). My sister, who I consider educated, is totally clueless when it comes to eating. She eats 1 meal a day with lots of snacks. She thinks if it's chicken, then it must be healthy. I don't think fried chicken is healthy. She says she eats a lot of salads .... covered in dressing.

Because the money is spent on the wrong things and not everyone is given the same level of education.

Because we are human and we have stresses and strains in life and its really scary to change patterns of behaviour that we have developed over a lifetime.

Its scary for us - and its scary for those around us when we adopt new attitudes and ways or thinking about life - never mind new types of behaviour! Its so much easier to stay in our little comfort zones - to coin a not-very-nice phrase to illustrate this kind of dilemma '**** stinks - but at least its warm'!

For a lot of people over-eating and not exercising - being obese is actually an addiction in itself - see www.oa.org

many people eat over stress and making a buck now and days is very stressful. I blame alot on technology now and days when it comes to excercise. everything is at your finger tips so why get up. before you had to get up to change a channel now you can sit there all day and push a button. when i was younger we went outside and played games now parents buy their kids videos and play stations and the kids never have to go outside. people are doing less and less while technology is doing more. every year they think of products to make are lives easier. what we need to do is focus more on activities and diet at a young age so that becomes a lifestyle and not choice

Pleasure in eating seems to be much higher than the pleasure gained from exercise. Another thing is staying still just chewing and swallowing is much more comfortable than exerting effort to move all the body. Flowing the saliva and gastric juices is a way far easier than flowing the sweat. You see, most people tend to choose whichever is easier and just leaving its consequences to whatever it will be depending on their lucks. "Que sera sera, whatever will be will be" is the appropriate song for this situation you are describing.♥

See, you are talking about people in general, but there are two distinctive groups within people in general. You can’t correlate two different groups of people into one.

In general:

RICH People spend money and get educated. <-- They are not fat lazy gluttons. They exercise regularly and eat healthy and look quite nice.

POOR people under-exercise and over eat <-- They don't know any better and try to comfort themselves with food.

See, how your statement is flawed?

Some people like being fat. If they didn't they wouldn't eat the way they do. My nephew loves chocolate (he's in his teens) and because he is over weight and gets called names I told him to only have a bar at the weekend for a treat. He didn't want to know so I told him then that it was his own fault for being fat. His mother doesn't know how much chocolate he eats as she only sees him for an hour or two.

Because education cannot control an individual's insulin production. High insulin production can cause weight gain due to causing low blood sugar, which stimulates the brain to demand more food, and slows down the urge to expend energy.

it's because there are so many diets out there, and when people diet, they can initially lose weight, but then they feel deprived so they go back to the old way of eating/not exercising. Most people don't realize that in order to lose weight and keep it off, a total lifestyle change is necessary, not a quick fix.

It has to do with the length of time between activity and reward. If I fancy a cream cake I get my reinforcement the second I bite into it while I understand that exercise is good for me I have to engage in a whole raft of potentially unpleasant activity before I achieve my reward.
