I am flying tomorrow with my family and have been told that we can carry 20 kgs/44 lbs each. This means nothing to me and I do not have scales. What objects weigh this much so I can try to work out how much we have??

20 bags of sugar. It's not as much as it sounds, though, once you factor in the weight of the suitcase itself on top of everything else!

I'd say that 1 kilogramme is about the same as a bag of sugar, so 20 kg is roughly the same as 20 bags of sugar.

I tend to guess that if I can carry it ok then it's about right. For the average guy or gal it's probably just as much as you can carry without difficulty. Don't use a huge case and don't take lots of books. They both throw the balance. Happy Holidays!

A bag of sugar is usually 1k - though I doubt you have 20 to spare!

Try the luggage calculator on www.20kilos.com

Other than that, my tip - if you're nervous - is to either not buy books/shampoo etc until you arrive at your destination, or to pack heavy objects in a carrier bag near the zip/opening of your case. That way, if you're over your allowance at check-in, you can pull out the heavier items and bin them, or put them in a shoulder bag and carry them on (though watch out for liquid restrictions in UK airport hand luggage.)

A gallon of water weighs about 8.5 pounds, so if you have a five gallon bucket, fill it up with water and that will be about 42 pounds which is close to the limit...hope this helps...
